35mm

The familiar 35mm cartridge, from everyday color negatives to black-and-white, slide, and motion-picture stocks.

How to identify it: Look for a 35mm cartridge with a perforated film leader. The stock name is usually printed on the cartridge or box.

Processing options

  • C-41 color negative
  • B&W
  • E-6 slide film
  • ECN-2 motion-picture color

Half-frame and panoramic rolls are still 35mm; mention the camera format when you send them. ECN-2 is a separate motion-picture process with its own handling.

Something unfamiliar? Keep it sealed. We can help identify it.

How we process
your film.

First we develop your film. Then we can scan the images into digital files and make photographic prints. Here’s what each step does.

Develop your film

The first step is developing your film in chemistry to see how your images turned out. Once the film is developed, we can see the photographs and prepare them for scanning and printing.

Scan your photographs

We scan the developed film to make digital files of your photographs. Choose a scan level for sharing, editing, or enlarging your favorites.

Make it a print

You shot it. Now put it on the wall. Add prints from your roll, make a set for a friend, or go big with a favorite frame. Real photographs, made from moments you were there for.

Think about what you’ll do with the photographs. Sharing a full frame needs a smaller file than cropping it tightly or making a large print.

Standard

For viewing and sharing your photographs, with smaller files that are easy to download.

Enhanced

A larger file for editing and more room to crop your favorite photographs.

Premium

The largest file option in the scan range, for more demanding crops and enlargements.

35mm & disposable cameras
A full-frame 35mm image is rectangular. Half-frame and panoramic cameras produce different image proportions.
120, 220 & 620
The camera determines the frame size: 6×4.5, 6×6, 6×7, and other formats have different proportions and pixel dimensions.
110, 126, 127, APS & Disc
These formats have their own scanning options. Choose your exact film format when ordering.
Sheet film
Tell us the sheet size and how you plan to use the photograph so we can recommend a scan.

Pixel dimensions tell you the width and height of the digital image. A scan level’s dimensions depend on the film format; a 35mm specification does not describe a 120 scan.

Before you

Can you work with old film?

Often, yes. Old film can be worth examining even when the box is faded or the history is unknown. Keep it sealed and tell us what you know about its age, storage, and camera.

What if I do not know what kind of film I have?

Send a clear picture of the cartridge, spool, box, or backing paper, or bring it to either store. We can help identify the format and decide what needs review before processing.

Can I drop film at either Black Lab store?

Yes. Mail-in service is available nationwide, and local drop-off is equally welcome at Quakertown or Flemington.

What is the difference between developing and scanning?

Developing makes the exposed film stable and viewable as negatives or positives. Scanning makes digital files from that developed film. They are separate parts of the service.

Do you develop Super 8 or Regular 8 color film?

We arrange Super 8 and Regular 8 color processing through a partner lab, with Black Lab as your drop-off hub. Kodachrome needs a different approach: we offer black-and-white recovery processing and digitizing, rather than color developing. Tell us the film stock so we can guide you to the right service. Already-developed movie film can be digitized without developing again.

Does shipping time count as film processing time?

No. Shipping to and from the lab is additional to the film’s turn-around time.

Can you develop Kodachrome movie film?

Yes—this is one of our specialties. We process undeveloped Kodachrome movie film as black-and-white to try to recover its images, then digitize any usable footage for viewing today. This does not restore the original colors, and recovery depends on the film’s age and condition. Call us with the film name and format so we can discuss your film before you send it.
